This is not a history, it is the personal journey of a historian. It presents a well organized and documented attack on the Lost Cause myth and how it fuels racism today.You can see how loved the myth is with the brigading of reviews to drive down the rating of the book. Just the suggestion St Lee was no saint is sufficient.The noble southern gentleman Lee who broke his oath to West Point and the Army is presented in the myth as having no choice but defend his beloved Virginia in reality he was the only one of eight Virginians holding the rank of colonel in the US Army to turn traitor. He was also the only one of the eight wealthy because of slaves.It is sad to see the lies of the Lost Cause entrenched today. Margret Mitchell once wrote one purpose of the klan was to stop Blacks from voting 7 or 8 times. Today it is prettied up to say in the cities or Democrats but the meaning remains.The book is a small step to tell a truth people do not wish to hear. Given recent political events, American civil society has taken a renewed look Southern culture, particularly some Southerners’ tradition of glorifying the Confederacy. Though symbolic, debates about the retention of Confederate monuments and statues have resulted in passionate reactions from both sides. In this vein Ty Seidel, former chair of history at West Point, recounts his long journey from being raised on myths about Lee and his fellow rebels to his new recognition of the confederates as evil traitors, scarcely different than the Nazis.A brief review will not and cannot settle this debate. So I merely hope to point out some of the strengths and weaknesses of Seidule’s account.Seidel is beyond doubt a bona fide Southerner. From his childhood upbringing, to the elite Southern schools he attended, to his service in the armed forces, Seidel has earned the right to speak of what he knows. His historiography, tracing the roots of Confederate remembrance to efforts to maintain white supremacy, seems carefully performed and well-substantiated. His reappraisal of Lee as a bigot and traitor to his country, is well-researched and appears to this non-expert as at least plausible.However, the book has weaknesses to match these strengths. Seidule attacks popular culture such as Uncle Remus and Disney’s the Song of the South but fails to mention cultural events like the PBS Civil War documentary. This took a very different view than the mature Seidel. In its account, both sides were Americans, both had heroes and both fought valiantly. It seems like Seidel found Uncle Remus an easier target than public broadcasting.Secondly, Seidel seems to locate the evil of slavery exclusively on the South. Slavery was an evil that infected America before, at and after its founding. Citizens and institutions from both the North and South profited from unremunerated black labor.Lastly, racism towards African-Americans is only one of many evils perpetrated by our country. Stealing of land and breaking treaties with First Peoples, imperialism, anti-Semitism...we’ve inflicted these blights on the world up to the current dehumanization of those living south of our border.To place the locus of evil on the South, to portray the South as akin to Nazi Germany—this to me just doesn’t jive with a fair reckoning of American history. So while I appreciate Seidule’s scholarship, I cannot fully follow the book’s conclusions. However, it will be an important work in shaping the public’s notion of Southern history and should be read by all with such interests. Read Online Robert E.
